In addition to finishing their High School education, Aberdeen Hall students are busy planning their post-secondary pursuits. For some, this will involve sending application packages to local universities and colleges. For others, this might involve writing SAT and AP tests, calculating GPAs and interviewing at American or international schools. Whatever direction they choose, these students will have the support and assistance of their teachers, administrators and Stephen Acree, the school’s University Guidance Counsellor. They will also have the technical support of our university guidance system, Naviance. Naviance bills itself as a college and career readiness platform that helps connect academic achievement to post-secondary goals. Senior School students can look forward to using the package to investigate careers, research universities and follow through with applications. Aberdeen Hall is committed to 100% university acceptance, and our students are ready to take on the world when they graduate.
Once students have submitted applications they can move onto the next steps. They should receive an email from the university they have applied to indicating any need to transcripts, and encouraging students to fill in a housing application in the new year. Once an offer of conditional acceptance has been received from a university students will have a period of time to accept the offer and issue a deposit to hold their placement.
Students also need to complete the Post Secondary Institutions Selections Form using the BC Ministry Student Secure Website. Instructions for completing this have been provided to the Grade 12 students. This online form indicates which post secondary institutions the Ministry is approved to release transcripts to. We will complete this task during our advisory block.
We will continue to explore scholarship opportunities with our students as applications open up and close in the coming months.
This fall our students had the opportunity to engage with a great variety of universities. Our campus has been visited by a number of institutions including the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, University of Calgary, University of Alberta, University of Saskatchewan, and Western University.
In addition to these visits, many of our students journeyed to tour the campuses of UBC Vancouver and Simon Fraser University, as well as to attend the VAIS American University Fair in October.
These opportunities are invaluable to our students as they consider which university is the best fit for their next step in their educational careers.
Plans are well on the way for a fantastic graduation year. The Graduation Ceremony will take place on Friday, June 3, and the Prom is scheduled for Saturday, June 4. Save those dates and watch for information about the RSVP process to be sent out in early January.
